About Us
The Alliance was initially formed when the core group of gastroenterologists decided to join forces to promote the concept of colon cancer prevention through education, screening and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Other specialists, such as radiologists, oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and nutrition specialists, play an integral role in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer and were eager to join the alliance. A crucial part of our team is the primary care physician who so often initiates the education and screening process. Finally, our patients play a vital role through the education of their families and friends.
Over the past eight years, the Colon Cancer Prevention Alliance has hosted many physician education meetings and community lectures to encourage participation in colon cancer screening programs. We have participated in community health fairs. We have been actively involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. We have been actively involved in enrolling patients in Cancer Prevention Study-3, a long term study to find ways to prevent cancer. We have received several awards from the American Cancer Society for our involvement in cancer prevention in our community.
We recently teamed up with the American Cancer Society to create The Colon Cancer Free Zone of Whittier, a campaign to raise awareness and encourage screening throughout our community. We look forward to partnering with Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital as well as other local employers, groups, and organizations to help us achieve our vision of a community without colon cancer.
Together, we expect to achieve substantial reductions in the number of cases of colorectal cancer and the loss of life to this preventable disease.
